Tooth extraction may be necessary if your tooth is too badly damaged, from tooth decay or trauma, to be repaired. If tooth decay extends to the centre of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels, bacterial invasion can lead to infection. Often this can be corrected with root canal therapy, but if the infection is so severe that antibiotics do not cure it, tooth extraction may be needed to prevent the spread of infection.
